Every September the National Merit Scholarship Program issues Letters of Commendation to approximately 34,000 students in honor of their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). To earn commendation, students must score among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students taking the PSAT each year.
Of the Commended Scholars, recognized in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, an astounding four are students from Point Pleasant Borough High School!
On Thursday, September 27 Point Pleasant Borough High School Principal Kurt Karcich, with Director of Guidance Edward McNeil presented seniors Kay Bros, Cory Brzycki, Christopher Doblovosky and Matthew Piccolella with framed Letters of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in honor of placing among the top students in the nation on the 2011 PSAT.
“Recognition by the highly competitive National Merit Scholarship Program is a tremendous honor,” said Mr. McNeil following the presentation. “Although Point Pleasant Borough students have traditionally done exceptionally well on the PSAT, with a number of students earning commendation almost every year, this is the highest number of Commended Scholars we have ever had in a single year.”
After personally congratulating the scholars, Principal Karcich also remarked on the rarity of having so many students recognized by the program, “Earning commendation in this extremely competitive program speaks volumes about the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by these four students.“
“As I begin my third month as principal of Point Pleasant Borough High School, I continue to be impressed by the many awards and accolades bestowed on our students and staff,” he said. “To have four Commended Students in one year, relative to our school’s size, is a testament to the high caliber academic programming characteristic of Point Pleasant Borough High School.”
In addition to the Letters of Commendation they received at school, the Commended Students will receive formal recognition by the Point Pleasant Borough Board of Education as well as by District Central Administration at the Board of Education Business Meeting on October 22, 2012.
“As National Merit Commended Scholars, Kay, Cory, Christopher and Matthew have been inducted into an elite group of academically accomplished students from across the country,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith. “And as the latest Point Pleasant Borough Schools to receive this distinction, they also join a community of distinguished Point Pleasant Borough High School alumni, the district’s past Commended Scholars, as representatives of both our district and the National Merit Scholarship Program.”
It is my pleasure to invite them to attend October’s Board Meeting, so that myself, along with the Board, may applaud their achievement,” he said. “I offer my sincerest congratulations to Kay, Cory, Christopher and Matthew. I am confident the entire district shares my pride in their academic success.”
