Point Foundation Media Center   Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education funds Boro High School Media Center upgrades

Since 1997, the Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education has established a tradition of providing support for various endeavors within Point Pleasant Borough Schools. Over the past 18 years, the Foundation, in cooperation with the Superintendent’s Office, has sought to identify high priority opportunities within the schools that are in need of financial support. To date, the Foundation has donated more than $360,000 to the Point Pleasant Borough School District.....

Upstander Contest   Memorial School students take top honors in first Annual Kidsbridge Youth Competition

Although it cannot currently be found in any published American dictionaries, the term ‘upstander’ has been assimilated over the past few years into the common vernacular in the nation’s elementary, middle and high schools. Most commonly associated with the anti-bullying movement, the word upstander is used to describe someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. The word’s rise to prominence has coincided with the anti-bullying movement’s gaining momentum.

CJ Gaylord   Point Boro's CJ Gaylord administers life-saving CPR to neighbor

Although he’d almost certainly hate the term, there’s no denying that Chris “CJ” Gaylord is a hero. According to the 17-year-old Point Pleasant Borough High School senior, he ‘just did what anyone would do’ when he rushed to the aid of a neighbor, and administered CPR to the unresponsive woman, saving her life.

On the evening of April 19, CJ was enjoying dinner with his parents and extended family when a frantic banging on the front door interrupted them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10 and 24, with approximately 4600 lives lost each year. For every reported death by suicide, however, there are approximately 12 attempts. The CDC reports that approximately 157,000 youths between the ages of 10 and 24 receive medical care for self-inflicted injuries each year. And these statistics don’t even begin to address the percentage of young people who contemplate suicide nor the number of adolescents with a diagnosable mental health disorder, a number that some experts estimate to be as high as 20 percent.

Point Pleasant Borough High School and Memorial Middle School’s Student Activities Funds will each have an additional $3,532.37 in their coffers thanks to the generosity of Jersey Mike’s Subs of Point Pleasant, whose owner, Jim Van Nostrand named the two schools beneficiaries of the store’s Month of Giving.

Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO Peter Cancro established the Month of Giving five years ago as a way for the company and its franchises to give back to their surrounding communities.
